To improve and promote adult learning in the Southeastern region of New Brunswick.

Our History

In 2006, the Provincial Government recommended that boards/committees be formed across the province to administer and monitor the General Educational Development (GED) and literacy programs. It was hoped that more local involvement would help bolster these programs and lead to higher literacy scores in the province.  The South East Regional Adult Learning Board (SERALB) was formed to administer the GED and literacy programs for all English-speaking adults in the region bounded by Richibucto, Petitcodiac and the New Brunswick provincial boundary in the south.  SERALB adopted the operating name of ‘Open Doors GED and Adult Learning’.

SERALB incorporated in December 2007, developed a mission statement, and a constitution. The following year SERALB applied for and was granted charitable status by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).  In 2020, upon the request of the province of NB, SERALB expanded its mandate to include the administration of the French language GED and literacy classrooms in south east NB.  To reflect this change, a new corporate name, South East Adult Education – Éducation des adultes du Sud-Est (SEAE-ÉASE), was adopted. 

Each year, as required by the CRA and the province, financial statements are provided to the CRA to retain the charitable status and to the provincial government for monitoring purposes. SERALB, and now SEAE-ÉASE, established itself to be a very financially responsible board.

Day time, evening, full-time and part-time classes are available in French and English throughout the south east region.  Through the co-operation of the New Brunswick Department of Justice and Public Safety, SEAE-ÉASE even operates a class in the Southeast Regional Correction Centre in Shediac! New classes are formed as the need arises. 

The funding for SEAE-ÉASE operations is provided by the Province of New Brunswick through WorkingNB, a branch of the Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour. SEAE-ÉASE is given money for teacher salaries and classroom and administrative expenses.  Because no funds are provided to pay classroom rent, SEAE-ÉASE relies on space being provided at no charge by the community.

Free basic computer training is offered to members of the public and students registered in a class on a regular basis.  The training provides basic computer skills to help adults gain skills that will assist them to enter or re-enter the workplace.

SEAE-ÉASE’s primary challenge is to make more students aware of the classes and encourage them to join.  There is no charge for a student to attend a class and some financial help may be available through WorkingNB. 

To celebrate the students who complete the GED, SEAE-ÉASE has a graduation recognition evening each fall with the graduates and their families in attendance. This is an open event to celebrate student accomplishment and present each graduate with a certificate to go along with the diploma received from the Province of New Brunswick.
